Spring in Japan is like a beautiful relay race of flowers, with one bloom following another throughout the season.
In March, you can see daffodils, adonis flowers, plum blossoms, peach blossoms, kobushi magnolias, magnolias, spirea, forsythia, enkianthus, Japanese andromeda, and cherry blossoms.
April brings tulips, double cherry blossoms, azaleas, nemophila, moss phlox, peonies, and wisteria.
In May, irises, rabbit-ear irises, peonies, satsuki azaleas, roses, carnations, and Japanese iris flowers come into season.
The photo was taken on April 21 at Kameido Tenjin Shrine, famous for its beautiful wisteria.
Kameido Tenjin has been known as a wisteria viewing spot since the Edo period, and was even featured in “One Hundred Famous Views of Edo” by the ukiyo-e artist Utagawa Hiroshige.
People in Edo would travel all the way from the city center just to admire these flowers. The iconic drum-shaped bridge from Hiroshige’s print still stands in the shrine grounds today — though it is now made of concrete.
A soft fragrance of wisteria filled the air as the long pale-purple blossoms swayed gently in the breeze.
The combination of spring sunlight and cascading wisteria is something people all over the world continue to love.
