The Previous Story
The story of bikeTKgardens begins in March 2025, on Iriomote Island.
At the time, I was working there harvesting sugarcane. Iriomote is a remarkable island — largely undeveloped, rich with endemic species, and surrounded by powerful, untouched nature. Despite its remote location, it welcomes many international visitors during the summer.
There, I met farmers working in the harsh natural environment, a young man from Slovakia on a working holiday, local guides, and many others. Each encounter gave me strength and inspiration. Gradually, I began to wonder if there was something I could create in Tokyo as well.
Something only I could do.
Something I could do precisely because of who I am.
That reflection became the beginning of bikeTKgardens.
If our guests can share in Japan’s landscapes, the seasonal winds, and that quiet feeling that stirs deep within the heart when witnessing them — and if they leave saying, “I’m truly glad I came to Japan” — there would be no greater joy for me.

A Japanese Word "en" (縁)
Let me introduce a Japanese concept known as en (縁).
In English, it is close in meaning to words such as fate, connection, bond, or even chance encounter.
Though invisible, it is something you truly feel the moment you take a step forward — a sense of connection, of oneness. It is sometimes said that such ties cannot easily be severed by one’s own will.
Connections between people.
Between people and places.
Between people and moments in time.
A bike will not move forward unless you pedal. It maintains its balance only when in motion. I cannot pedal in your place, but I can guide you — and promise you the finest experience of Tokyo.
I hope that there is en between you and us.
Atsushi Tanaka, Founder & Guide
Born in Fukuoka Prefecture, he majored in Japanese history at Waseda University.
While still a student, he developed a deep interest in music, culture, and history. After graduating, he worked in Tokyo as a bike messenger and performed as a Japanese bamboo flute musician. Through these experiences, he came to know the city with his body — its constantly shifting rhythms, its topography, and the subtle differences in atmosphere from one time of day to another.
He later chose the path of a gardener, studying the philosophy embedded in Japanese gardens, their way of engaging with nature, and the aesthetic principles behind them. In addition to his work as a gardener, he currently serves as an instructor at a vocational school.
He has also traveled extensively as a backpacker and spent time living in the United Kingdom. On Iriomote Island, he encountered people who live closely with nature and came to deeply appreciate the importance of understanding a place, respecting one another, and forming meaningful connections.
Through these layered experiences, he founded bikeTKgardens — a project centered on gardens, created to share the cultural depth of Tokyo. Drawing on both his urban sensibility and the cultural, ecological perspective he cultivated, he thoughtfully designs experiences that become unforgettable for each individual visitor.
